MSME/Udyam Registration: Benefits & Process
Learn why Udyam registration matters and how to complete it in under 15 minutes.
What is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration replaced the earlier MSME/UAM registration from July 1, 2020. It's a completely online, paperless, and free process introduced by the Ministry of MSME. The registration is permanent and does not require renewal. Every MSME must register on the Udyam portal to avail government benefits, subsidies, and schemes.
MSME Classification Criteria
Micro Enterprise: Investment up to ₹1 crore and turnover up to ₹5 crore. Small Enterprise: Investment up to ₹10 crore and turnover up to ₹50 crore. Medium Enterprise: Investment up to ₹50 crore and turnover up to ₹250 crore. Both investment and turnover criteria must be satisfied. The classification applies to both manufacturing and services enterprises (no distinction since 2020).
Benefits of Udyam Registration
Collateral-free loans under CGTMSE scheme (up to ₹5 crore). Lower interest rates on bank loans (typically 1–1.5% less). Priority sector lending from banks. 50% subsidy on patent and trademark registration. Protection against delayed payments (buyer must pay within 45 days). Preference in government tenders. Exemption from direct tax for initial years (in certain cases). Subsidy on ISO certification. Access to MSME-specific schemes like CLCSS, PMEGP, and more.
Step 1: Visit the Udyam Portal
Go to udyamregistration.gov.in. Click on 'For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME.' You'll need your Aadhaar number — for proprietorship, use personal Aadhaar; for partnership/company, use the authorized signatory's Aadhaar along with the organization's PAN and GSTIN.
Step 2: Aadhaar Verification & OTP
Enter your Aadhaar number and the name as per Aadhaar. Click 'Validate & Generate OTP.' Enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. This step authenticates your identity and pre-fills some basic details.
Step 3: Fill the Registration Form
Provide the following details: Type of organization (proprietorship, partnership, LLP, Pvt Ltd, etc.), PAN of the enterprise (mandatory for non-proprietorship), name and address of the enterprise, date of commencement, bank account details (account number, IFSC), major activity (manufacturing or services), NIC 2-digit code for your business activity, number of employees, and investment and turnover details (auto-fetched from IT returns and GSTIN if linked).
Step 4: Submit & Get Your Certificate
Review all details and click 'Submit & Get Final OTP.' Enter the final OTP to complete registration. Your Udyam Registration Number (URN) and Certificate are generated instantly. The certificate is emailed to your registered email address. Format of URN: UDYAM-XX-00-0000000 (state code + district code + serial number).
Important Points to Remember
The registration is self-declaration based — no documents need to be uploaded. Investment and turnover figures are validated from IT returns and GST returns via API integration. If your enterprise grows beyond the medium category, the registration is automatically updated. You can update your Udyam Registration details anytime on the portal. One enterprise can have only one Udyam registration, but it can list multiple activities.
